Numerical simulation of multiphase flows in the coupled «reservoir-well-ESP» system
We present a physical and mathematical formulation for coupled unsteady three-phase flow in a reservoir, a well, and an electrical submersible pump (ESP). We develop and implement a numerical algorithm for the simulation of the one-dimensional nonisothermal drift-flux model for the flow in the well tubing and the annulus. The reservoir is modeled using the three-dimensional isothermal black-oil model. The ESP is simulated using its head and energy characteristics to account for heat transfer between fluids in the well and in the ESP. We validate the model by comparing the simulation results with an analytical solution and the results obtained with a commercial simulation package. The model is used to simulate well performance.
