Investigation of a lateral air electromagnetic wave in electrical prospecting
Abstract:
This work is of a methodological nature and is related to the development of an effective numerical and analytical solution of Maxwell's equations for electrical prospecting problems based on the 1D plane-layered geological space model. In [1], an 'additive' computational scheme was developed to solve such a problem. One of the components of this scheme is the calculation of different types of waves propagating directly from the source to the receiver in a two-layer water-air space. Such waves, and especially the so-called lateral air electromagnetic wave, are a 'parasitic' signal that can 'crush' the useful signal from inhomogeneities in the earth's thickness. In this regard, in this paper, an actual investigation of the propagation of waves of different types in a two-layer water-air medium is carried out, with an emphasis on the lateral wave, isolated and studied as an independent object. The corresponding effective representations in the form of formulas in the frequency and time domains are obtained, and the results of numerical calculations of the lateral wave using the developed approximations are presented. The paper also considers the application of an ultrashort electric current pulse for near-field radar.
