A brief history of the emergence and development of artificial intelligence (AI) is presented, including the Dartmouth Conference of 1956, where the foundations of modern AI were laid and where this term was first used. In addition, myths and legends are mentioned, reflecting dreams of man-made assistants endowed with artificial intelligence. The works of the predecessors of modern AI - philosophers and inventors - are described. Attention is paid to public initiatives (the Rome Call for AI Ethics, the open letter Pause Giant AI Experiments), as well as regulations governing AI in countries on all continents.
