The present article contains a review of research on
machine translation in the world as of 1988. The
article contains two parts. The first provides a
general overview of machine translation systems,
their types, structure and workflow and also briefly
outlines the history of translation automation. The
second part characterizes the state of research in
different countries.
The article is intended for readers who are not
specialists in machine translation.
